Bisgeos Run

Raising money for local charities

Our plan, to create the BISGEOS 12 MILE RUN/WALK as a special day in ORKNEY, has worked out and we are proud to raise substantial funds with this event for people in need in ORKNEY.

About The Bisgeos Run

The idea, to organize a charity run/walk on WESTRAY dates back to June 05.

When Ruth, Michelle and myself had our morning tea in the islands surgery such an idea appeared, was taken up with enthusiasm and soon a rough concept of the BISGEOS 12 MILE RUN/WALK was done.

Alena and Lizza welcomed the idea and offered their support by joining our race committee.

It was clear to us, that we didn't want to add another official event to a serious runner's diary, but to create a whole day event on this beautiful island.

The day begins with a run/walk from the ferry terminal in RAPNESS to the BISGEOS near the NOUP, and to make it a day for the whole family we have shorter distances for the younger athletes. The feel-good-factor of this physical achievement should carry the participants through the other events of the day. Gordon, Wilma, John and Rosslyn welcome the runners and walkers past the finishing line at the BISGEOS with cool drinks and barbecued food including venison burgers, rabbit and mackerel. The view from the BISGEOS rounds up this great experience.

The afternoon is left free, to explore the sites of WESTRAY or relax the tired muscles in the pool.

At night we invite you to a buffet-dance in the island hall. Alison and Company prepares original WESTRAY-dishes and add beautifully displayed wild salmon, venison roasts, lobster and crab a feast for eye and palate.

John and his band complete the day by entertaining the revived runners and walkers with ORKNEY - tunes and dances until the early morning hours. This is only interrupted by the raffle prize draw (see This Years Run page for more details).

The proceeds of this event are given to a different local charity-organisation each year. We insist the money is spent in ORKNEY for specific purposes.

After the first BISGEOS 12 MILE RUN/WALK we were able to offer over £10.000 to MACMILLAN/ORKNEY for the purchase of portable oxygen-concentrators and the following year we raised again over £10.000 for MS-CARE on ORKNEY, to arrange workshops all over ORKNEY bringing help by physio, occupational-therapists, dietitians and MS-nurses close to patients and carers.

The proceeds of this year’s event will be offered to local RNLI.
